This summer, the Licking County Age-Friendly Initiative is using insights from our recent Community Assessment to imagine what a more supportive, inclusive community could look like for older adults.

Workgroups are actively meeting across key focus areas—Health Systems, Transportation and Outdoor Spaces, Housing, Communication, and Social Supports—to shape our official Action Plan.

In our county-wide survey of adults 60 and older, nearly half said they didn’t feel they had access to the health information they needed, or didn’t know where to find it. That’s a problem we can’t ignore.

We’re Exploring: Summer Fun & Local Transit

Warmer weather is the perfect time to enjoy the parks, events, and outdoor spaces Licking County has to offer, and getting there is easier than you might think.

According to our Age-Friendly Community survey, 91% of older adults still drive, or rely on someone who does. But did you know Licking County’s public transportation options are growing?

We’re Learning: Housing Stability is a Growing Concern for Older Adults

Our recent county-wide survey revealed that while 81% of older adults in Licking County own their homes, nearly 1 in 5 reported cutting back on essentials like food or medication just to afford housing.

For renters, the situation is even more pressing: Over half are at financial risk, spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs.

These realities highlight the urgent need to rethink local housing strategies. As housing policy expert Shane Phillips puts it:

“If housing is scarce, it cannot be affordable.”

Phillips, author of The Affordable City: Strategies for Putting Housing Within Reach, recently joined Dayton’s PBS series Brick by Brick to share real, scalable housing solutions.
